Alan Moores World Cup football comic strip
With the 2026 Football World Cup currently underway I thought it would be fun to take a look at some UK football comic strips. In order to make this more interesting for the many non footy fans out there, I thought I would start with a strange strip written by the legendary Alan Moore. Written in 1982, at a time when Moore was working in UK comics, this 3 page tongue-in-cheek strip appeared in the Marvel UK one shot "Not the World Cup". Its not one of his best but it is a fun tale nicely illustrated by the then Roy of the Rovers artist Barrie Mitchell ( above - cover to "Not the World Cup" by John Higgins).
For those interested Italy won the 1982 World Cup with England finishing 6th. Scotland as usual failed to get out of their tsection despite a good performance only losing 1 of their 3 games to Brazil. Next up my top 10 favourite UK football comic strips.

Terrible lettering job. Mr.Aldrich was infamous for not making his speech bubbles complement the art. The second panel of the first page is a fine example of that. Didn't bother reading the strip as football is boring. Did you ever get around to reading Action Comics #583?
ReplyDeleteI thought you might not be a footy fan Kid. Yes, I have read it now and when I get time I will be adding it to my blog. We're still up and down to hospital with Linda's dad and staying over etc but things starting to look better for him now, so will have more time to scan some pages, these ones I did in advance .
ReplyDeleteNot a "football" fan myself, even the American version. Baseball is more my sport these days but even that has failed to thrill in many a year. I am glad that many folks are enjoying the World Cup in the U.S. this year despite the hazards our government has put in the way of some getting here. As a citizen I welcome one and all -- one day I hope my government joins me once again in that desire.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be said that the US governments treatment of the Iran Football team and some others has been disgraceful. My interest in football isn't what it used to be but the World Cup has a certain gold over me, saying that once Scotland fail to progress my interest will be less.
