Bizarre characters: Beware the Creeper #1 Steve Ditko & Denny O'Neil
OK it has to be said the Creeper is simply bizarre . His origin is based on Jack Ryder ( the Creeper) donning various outfits from a fancy dress store in order to attend a mob run costume party to track down a kidnapped Russian scientist, Professor Yatz.
During this investigation Ryder is stabbed and Yatz injects him with a serum that heals him and gives him strength and agility. Not weird enough for you? well he also inserts a molecular changing device into Ryders wound that allows his bizarre costume to appear and disappear at will. Despite the weirdness of the Creeper this series contains some of Ditko's best art.
The original Creeper series only lasted for 6 issues between June 1968 and April 1969 ( plus an appearance in DC Showcase # 73).
A final note on the above comic. Normally any comic I feature on my blog I originally read back in the day. However in this case I only read this comic last month when I picked it up on a trip to Brighton for a very reasonable price .

Alas being only like 8 years old at the time, I only remember DC’s “house ad” which certainly inspired my curiosity. I think this is the first time reading it! Thanks for posting! CH
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I could agree with you about it being some of Ditko's best art, McS, though it was better than what followed. After he left Marvel, his art, like Kirby's, started to decline in my view. His Warren art was good, though I can't recall whether it came before or after his DC work. I'm not saying his DC work was bad, mind, just that it wasn't as good as his Spidey and Dr. Strange stuff.
