Favourite Toys: Action Man, chicken feet and the Mr Benn antique shop time machine
It’s true that most of us all-too-often struggle with attachment. We cling to people, places, and things like comic books and toys from our past for all sorts of reasons. Moving home especially our first home can be a truly emotional experience as we are leaving behind the home where we developed our first friendships, where we first went to school or where we played with our favourite childhood toys.
My family first moved into what was to be my first real home (pictured above as it looks today looking very run down ) when I was around 3 years old in 1963. Dubbed the “electric flats” we moved into the top floor of a newly built two storey maisonettes just outside Glasgow as part of the redevelopment of the city. It would be fair to say that I was lucky (not all kids were) I had an idyllic childhood with loving parents, a kind/fun brother and great friends living in an all mod cons new house in a time when it was encouraged for kids to simply be kids. Yet despite having had a great life for the 5 years that we stayed in that house I had almost no memory of the day I left my first home. Well, that was until around May this year when visiting a local antique market, I came across the above Action Man Ski Patrol outfit that was on sale in a ridiculously overpriced stall in the market.
The mind is a strange thing in how it makes connections to the past, as immediately upon seeing that ski patrol outfit and those Action man stars I was transported back to the living room of my maisonette home on Christmas day circa 1965 playing with my Action Man (actually it was a GI Joe that I had) decked out in his ski patrol outfit as he undertook a dangerous mission on our lamb’s wool rug (used to simulate snow) in front of our toasty 2 bar electric wall mounted fire. That memory then triggered a series of other half-forgotten events from that time including the day my pal Ronnie received a Johnny Seven toy gun for his birthday (I’m still jealous some 55 years later) and the time his cousin broke his arm while playing “dead man falls” trying to re-enact the effects of being hit by a German grenade. Stranger still, I had a vivid flashback to when a group of my pals and myself were playing round the back of some local shops and we came across a bag of chicken parts from the butchers. The bag contained some chicken talons (I know disgusting), but you can imagine the fun a group of 6-year-old boys had with that and the torment we must have put the poor girls thorough.
So, what has all this all to do with the memory of me leaving my first home, well in the same display case that housed the Action Man outfit was a small blue plastic cap rocket. I used to have loads of these as a kid but on seeing the blue rocket I had an almost instantaneous nano second flashback to the day when my pal Ronnie had given me a similar rocket as a going away present just as we were leaving our old house in my dad’s Ford Anglia to move to our new home. I can still see my dad’s car in my mind’s eye with the family all crammed in and carrying some items we hadn’t managed to put into the removal van and the sight of our neighbours and my pals waving us goodbye as folk did back then. Like Mr. Benn I plan to visit that antique market again very soon to see what items may trigger some other long forgotten memories.

Nearly a half-century on I still consider 1973 to be the year that cemented my destiny in becoming a lifetime comic book fan. It was a yea...
I too wish I'd had a Johnny Seven gun when I was a kid. Maybe one day I'll win the Lottery and be able to afford one on ebay. Concerning those cap rockets, I always bought red ones as that was my favourite colour. A good many years back I bought a slightly smaller version, but I plan on eventually tracking down one the same as I used to have as a boy. And a red space gun water pistol - red of course.
ReplyDeleteMeant to say, as you've probably seen on my blog, my father had a rather peculiar car - a Nobel 200 - of which I managed to obtain a limited edition white metal model by a German company called Budig a few years back. (I think that there was only either 800 or 8,000 made - can't remember which.) I added copies of the number plates, taken from photos of his actual car, and it's great to have a tangible reminder of our blue and white family car. Have you ever thought about getting either a Corgi or Dinky (or even Matchbox) model of your dad's car in the same colour, just to have as a more tangible reminder?
DeleteI always tended to get various versions and colours of toys where they were available so with cap rockets I remember having red, blue, yellow and green rockets . Similarly for Action Man when Christmas, birthdays etc came around I would ask if I could have a new Action Man with a specific hair colour (I remember having black, blonde, red (or was I auburn?) and brown haired Action Men). I was the same with water pistols (they were so much fun weren’t they). Yes indeed I am on the lookout for a decently priced Matchbox, Corgi or Dinky Ford Anglia (light green colour like my dad’s). There was a Dinky version in that market the right colour etc but they wanted £37 for it (although it was in nice condition and had the box) . I am in the process of converting our loft into a “man cave” (its floored has a window , electricity etc) so I can properly store and display some of my comics, toys (I only have a few old toys) and records.
ReplyDeleteThat antique market had a Johnny Seven (One Man army) gun for sale . I had forgotten how big it was.
Thanks for posting this, McScotty. I would never in a million years have recalled my cap rocket (Red and White plastic) if you had not posted a photo. I had both the one you posted plus a smaller one, but I preferred the larger one as it had greater weight to it and more reliably produced a satisfying bang.
ReplyDeleteI never had a Johnny Seven gun, but did have a toy sub-machine gun in green plastic - again your post tweaked a memory cell. Great stuff.
Hi Don't know why but your message repeated 3 times there Ian, I hope you don't mind that I deleted the duplicates . Cap rockets were such a favourite toy of mine as a kid and I had forgotten about these myself until a few years ago so when I saw this one I had to have it (£3 is not bad for a 55 year old toy) . My one is all blue (I took a copy from eBay for ease) . I had forgotten they had large and small cap rockets until you said, now I want a small one lol. That sub machine gun sounds familiar but sadly I never had one. Glad I triggered a wee blast from the past
ReplyDeleteYou have such a bad memory, McS. I mentioned the smaller version in my first comment. Incidentally, if you tick the box saying 'delete for all time' (or something similar) when you're deleting a comment, it disappears forever without the space-consuming 'This comment has been removed by a blog administrator' bit.
DeleteSorry for the multiple postings, McScotty. It is an issue I have seen before that a single comment replicates 2 or 3 times on my own blog. It only seems to happen if I post a comment via Safari on my iPhone - not via any other browser on a laptop. It may be that I have posted a comment and then tabbed backwards and somehow blogger reposts the comment because the "publish" state is still in the cache. Anyway, I'll try to stick to using the laptop going forward.
DeleteSo you did Kid, but in this case it wasn't so much a bad memory but I had just finished work at 1:00am ( not sure why it says 3:56pm on my reply) after a looong day and was bushed. Thanks for the deletion info. I'm also having issues trying to add links to other blogs like yours.
ReplyDeleteClick on 'layout' in your blog's stat page and you can create a blog-list box as a sidebar. That's the Reader's Digest version, but that's how you start the process.
DeleteMcS, if you're still looking for Creepy Worlds #67, reprinting Avengers #6, there's one on ebay at the moment, starting bid £10. No bids so far.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Kid appreciate that info. I am still looking but I don't do Ebay now. As I mentioned in one of your blogs I had and issue with them and decided they're "dumped".
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember, but thought you might make an exception in this case because you've been after this mag for so long. Is a tenner more than you'd want to pay? Let me know how high you'd be prepared to go, and if you want, I'll bid on it on your behalf.
