House ads: Part one - DC comics

Back in the days before the internet, specialist comic book shop and professional fanzines like “Wizard” (are these still published?) one of the few ways you would find out about any new comic book being published was thought the various house ads that appeared in the comics of various publishers. Of course knowing that a new comic was due to be published back then didn’t automatically mean that you would ever see that new comic in the spinner racks, but it was fun and exciting a looking for them. Some of these House ads were really well presented pieces of comic book art and I find myself hanging onto certain comics I purchased back in the day just for these adverts alone. Below are some of my favourite house ads from DC comics.

In part two I will bore you all with some of my very favourite 1960's /70's Marvel House ads!

  1. You are in my sweet spot now amigo. I love these vintage ads. Often I didn't or couldn't get my mitts on the actual comics but I lusted after them from afar from the hints in these kinds of ads. In later years I made a point to gather up the more memorable books and add them to my collection.

  2. They are good aren't they the good th i g was that most companies did these and they were all good. I'll publish a few others in part three from Mighty Comics that are so if their time it's funny. One of the things I wish comic collections would do is add the House ads - better still a book of these would be good.

  3. This post wasn't showing in my list a few hours ago, so I wonder if you need to go into settings and change the time settings. I'm betting that you didn't reply to RJ's comment at 3.21 in the morning.

Great to see these ads again, takes me right back. Looking forward to part two.

  4. Great selection of house ads, McScotty. DC really knew how to create some excellent ads for other comics. As Rip says above, they really created a yearning to get those comics. I'm looking forward to your next selection.

  5. Thanks baggsey - I always loved seeing these ads in the comics and the memory of some of them has lasted longer than the memory of the comic i first saw them in. I'm just looking out a few of the Marvel ads I have (and some others companies ads). I'll be commenting on your recent excellent post later today I had to delete my last comment ( long story).
