Post Christmas present to myself - Marx Marvel Superhero figures

On a Boxing day visit to a local antique shop, I came across a figure of a Marvel superhero (Iron-Man) which seemed to trigger a memory that was buried deep in the recesses of my mind. After chatting to the stall owner, he informed me that this figure was part of a set that made up some of Marvels first models and were advertised in their comics back in 1967-1970. Although I had no memory of the actual figures, I immediately remembered the advert (shown below) and had always wanted to purchase one when I was a kid, if I ever managed to see them. I had no idea if these figures were ever on sale in the UK in the late 1960s or early 1970s but some 54 years after first seeing these advertised I have now managed to purchase a figure - 10 year old me would be very happy.
Above my Iron-Man figure (approx 15cm ) - I'm not really into models or action figures but this one looked so cool and I had some Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket (it only cost me £5). The picture above (and at the heading) is from the internet and shows the other figures that were available.
Above is the advert that appeared in many of the early Marvel comics advertising these figures. These were produced by Marx and featured figures of Captain America, Daredevil, The Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Thor. The first set were cast in various colours including blue, green, orange, and bright red, with later versions being coloured brown, dark red, silver, and grey.

  1. Funnily enough, it's the Iron Man figure I have also. Incidentally, they were reissued in either the '80s or '90s. I painted mine, so I'll let you know where it is on my blog shortly, should you be interested in seeing it. I must've had mine for around 25-plus years now, if not longer.

  2. I couldn't find it on my blog so I took a photo and published it in a new post, just for you. Incidentally, does yours say 'Marx' on the base? That bit of excess plastic on his left boot indicates that it's a non-official recast. Still well-worth a fiver though.

    1. I see you've borrowed the pic of 'your' Iron Man from the Internet, so perhaps your actual figure doesn't have that excess piece of plastic. Best wishes to your - no, I refuse to say 'partner' as it sounds too business-like and unloving - other half's parents.

  4. Yeah the pics are all from internet for now as I'm currently staying away from home. I'll update my Iron Man pic when I get home as I'm back at work soon . I'm not a fan of using "partner " at my age as well, but that will have to do until we "tie the knot".

  5. Great find! I've never seen one of those to my knowledge and I sure didn't know that ad was for that set. I suspect the Thor figure in the ad is one of Sal Buscema's very first things at Marvel. I could be wrong, but always got a strong Sal vibe off that part of the ad.

  6. I was chuffed to see this one and pick it up after so long. I think I see a letter/initial at Thors left leg ( as you look at the illo) but can't make it out. I did read somewhere that Sal drew some house ads so your probably correct Rip.

  7. Take a wee look at my post again, McS, to see what the Iron Man figure is based on.
