Favourite comics: Super Heroes v Super Villians. Mighty Comics
As I mentioned in my very fist post the Mighty Comics Group (Archie Comics) published some of my favourite childhood comics. One of my favourite of their titles was the 1966 one off title " Super Heroes Versus Super Villains" which featured characters like Fly Man, the Web, Black Hood and the Shield. Looking at these comics again with adult eyes there is no doubt that these books were not classics but they were fun and were synonymous with the Silver age of comics. Written by Jerry Siegel with art by Paul Reinman,Frank Giacoia and Mike Sekowsky this books hearkens back to a more simple time, they were never going to compete with Marvel or DC's output but 6 year old me loved these comics.
I picked up the above comic during my recent trip to the US ( Cincinnati ). This issue featured reprints from the Mighty Comics title "the Adventures of the Fly/ Fly Man" from 1965. Next up from my US adventure Dr Strange by Gene Colan and Tom Palmer.

Something wrong with your comments option, McS. When I tried to leave a comment, the comment box said 'Sign in with Google'. Anyway, that first splash page you show (Abyss) definitely has a 'Marvel' vibe about it. I think I've only got one issue of Mighty Crusaders, which might be #1.
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of issues with blogger yesterday and had to reset a lot of the blog aas. Not sure if that was due to me downloading pics to the blog from my phone and setting it up from my tablet. Hopefully it's ok now . Yeah Mighty comics made no secret they were trying to copy Marvel. I don't think I have ever seen the first issue of the Crusaders I have issue 3 to 7.
ReplyDeleteYes, the comments option is back to normal. Maybe the Government hacked your computer in revenge for you using a photo of Keir Starmer as your avatar. (Guffaw!)
DeleteI will ignore that last comment 🙂
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, McS, your previous post is still showing in my bloglist. Just checked, refreshed my browser, no change.
DeleteI noticed that on a few other sites, no idea why that is but will look into it when I'm home
ReplyDeleteMcS, the facsimile of Action Comics #583 is now on sale (the 2nd part of 'Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?' by Alan Moore) so don't forget to grab one.
ReplyDeleteI actually just read the one you gave me Kid so I will be picking #583 up. Thanks for the update
ReplyDeleteThese Mighty Comics totally passed me by when I was collecting comics and scoring the second-hand shops for back issues in the early 1970s. They look a lot of fun. Where in the Cincinatti area did you pick it up?
ReplyDeleteI think it was called Mavericks . I have a massive soft spot for some Mighty Comics as I read them as a child but as I mentioned previously they aren't Marvel and reading them as an adult they are just silly. But your spot on they were fun. Mighty comics were reprinted in Alan Class comics and I remember reading some Fly strips as a teenager and thinking they were awful.
